It was a completely miserable experience, and I have no idea what drugs they were doing at GM in the 90s. Fair warning...this is a total hack job, look away if you’re sensitive....

The blower motor is under that plastic cover. I had to remove the computer, and the coolant reservoir. Because that’s completely reasonable. Now, get this. The way you’re actually supposed to replace this is by cutting the plastic cover away. It even says “cut here”. Maybe this is normal to other people, but I’m still not over it, it seems ridiculous to me.

I couldn’t get anything like a good angle to cut at, so I mostly just hacked at it until I could take the screws out of the old motor. There was one screw left, in the plastic, that was the only thing left holding it in. According to the Internet, I needed to remove the fender. Seriously. The fender, to replace my stupid blower motor. On principle, I declined to do this, and instead channeled Jeremy clarkson.

I hit it with a hammer until it came out. Not my finest moment, but I was hot, tired, and running out of time and couldn’t even start my truck because I had to remove two pretty vital things. All because even by 1997, GM hadn’t figured out this whole “engineering” thing. Above is the destruction I let loose on my poor Blazer. Anyways, I got the new motor in, it’s sealed fine, the screw I eliminated was redundant, and the plastic cover seems to have been pointless. And now I can drive in the rain with the windows up! And defog my windshield in the winter! These are new and exciting concepts to me. Turns out the motor was the only problem, the steering input causing changes was probably due to it being so sensitive to electrical input in its worn out state.

New motor in, threw the reservoir and computer back in and she was good to go. I mean, other than all the other problems....

GM’s had a rough history with blower motors.

My ‘76 Delta 88 would have required fender removal, there was no other way.

My ‘98 Bonneville required bending the shit out of a motor hoist bracket.

Well I’m pretty sure their goal is to have owners go “well the fan thingy is broke - better spend $45,000 on a new car.”

Hell I’d take GM blower motor locations anyday. On the E38 it’s buried under the dash in a former native american burial yard. The ideal retrofit is the K5 blazer blower or any C/K blower, the jeep people love them apparently.

Awesome fix! And yes, you’re not the first person to say wtf was GM thinking when they did X.

Amazing. Mine’s 3 screws under the dash and it pops out. You do have to kind of lay on your back and get your hear under the dash, but getting access to it’s one of the easiest things.
